Caregiver / Home Care Aide — For People Who Were Born to Do This

Des Moines, IA
Part Time to Full Time
Entry Level

Job Overview

Somewhere in Des Moines tomorrow morning, a woman in her eighties will wake up and wait.

Not for breakfast. For a knock at the door — for the one person who makes it possible to keep living in the house where she raised her kids. Someone who shows up on time, remembers how she takes her coffee, and treats her like a person instead of a task list.

Some days, that person is the only face she’ll see. We’re looking for that person.

Who we are

Visiting Angels Des Moines provides in-home care across Des Moines, West Des Moines, Urbandale, Grimes, Johnston, Clive, Norwalk, Pleasant Hill and Altoona. Our whole philosophy fits in four words: reliable, compassionate care. That sounds simple, and it is — because those are the two things every family lies awake worrying about: Will someone actually show up? And will they actually care when they do?

So that’s the entire hiring bar. Reliable. Compassionate. Everything else — transfers, dementia care, mechanical lifts, veteran care — we can teach. And we do: over 60 hours of paid, hands-on training in your first year, with real certificates to show for it, taught in person at our office on real equipment. We take your growth seriously because we take this work seriously.

Who does well here

Our best caregivers have been caring for people their whole lives — for parents, for kids, for a spouse, for neighbors — and wanted that to finally be their profession, not just their reputation. Some raised their families and weren’t done taking care of people. One spent years serving elderly and disabled Iowans until her program’s funding dried up, and came to us looking for another way to help. That’s who works here.

The families we serve describe our caregivers as “friendly and knowledgeable” and tell us the team “bent over backwards to help.” Those are real words from real families — and someday soon, they could be describing you.

The honest part

This work is not for everyone, and we won’t pretend it is. You’ll work alone in other people’s homes. Some clients have dementia and won’t remember your name, no matter how well you cared for them yesterday. Some days will break your heart a little. Caregiving is real work — physical, emotional, human work.

If reading that made you lean away — that’s okay, and thank you for reading this far. If it made you lean in: keep going. You’re who this was written for.

Visiting Angels Des Moines Caregiver

“I am thrilled to be part of the Visiting Angels Des Moines team! The support from the office team is exceptional, and communication is always clear and effective. The flexibility of hours allows me to balance my work and personal life perfectly. Additionally, the way we treat our customers is truly commendable, always prioritizing their needs and well-being. I highly recommend this team to anyone looking for a supportive and rewarding work environment. ”

What we promise back

Because we believe caregiving is a profession — not a stopgap — we treat it like one: your raises are in writing before you’re even hired, every training hour is paid from day one, you earn real PTO, and short visits and holidays pay premium rates. You’ll see every detail on paper at your interview. No mystery, no “it depends.”

One more thing: our application asks for a little more information about you and that matters more to us than your resume — tell us about someone you’ve cared for, and what they taught you. Take your time with that one. We read every answer.
